Club History

Club History

Tri-Weapon Fencing Club (1961), and Salle Palasz (1971) were founded by the late Richard Oles, fencing master. They are the longest running extant fencing clubs in Maryland. Fencing Institute of America was founded in Pittsburg, PA by Coach Foley. The clubs are currently being run by the combined efforts of members of Coach Oles’s family, and his students.

Dick Oles served as head coach at Johns Hopkins University for 43 years and was one of the winning-est coaches in JHU history. He was inducted into the Hopkins Athletics Hall of Fame. He was one of three American-born coaches to pass the international fencing master’s examination when it was first introduced in North America. Dick was a long-time member and Director of the MD Division of US Fencing and was on the Board of the US Fencing Coaches Association. He strove continually to advance the sport through training, education and promotion.
Salle Palasz is Baltimore’s link in the East Coast’s chain of top salles, while Tri-Weapon Boys’ Club has produced many national youth champions.

Dick was among the nation’s best coaches with a lifetime commitment to American fencing.  In the Baltimore area, the sport’s finest traditions are maintained in his honor.
